The Do Lectures -Co Founder Don't just stand there, Do something - Dick Dastardly.

Is this the biggest trade secret of the Internet?

Plumbers, chefs, electricians all have their trade secrets. Those little tools or techniques that just make it easier for them to do what they do. It’s the things that make them professional and separates them from the amateurs.

The Internet is the same. It has its tools and techniques that help you stand out. I discovered this by accident.

At some point last year, I was trying to figure out why I was having so many visitors to my blog (davidhieatt@typepad.com). It’s a small blog and the traffic is small but regular. But suddenly the traffic was spiking. That one article had been viewed 45,000 times.

And I didn’t know why. So I began to dig.

When I started to look into it, it turned out that 99% of my traffic was coming from Stumble Upon. It was coming from a single piece I had put on my blog that someone had obviously liked and then had put up on Stumble Upon. And from there it just went a little bit crazy.

I knew of Stumble Upon before this. But I didn’t use it. It wasn’t on my radar. But it was dawning on me just how powerful a tool it is.

So I decided to try and find out more about how to use Stumble Upon. I watched a video by Tim Ferris who I believe amongst other things, is a truly great direct marketeer.

I visited his blog and found a video where he tells the audience just how important Stumble Upon was as a tool for getting his great content out there. I know how good Tim is at using the secret tools of the Internet, so that made me ask the question why doesn’t everyone know how good Stumble Upon is? It was like some secret tool for those in the know. Except, and I keep saying it, it’s massive.

Everyone talks about Facebook, Twitter and Google, (and understandably so) but no one talks about Stumble Upon. And yet it is huge. This set of Internet stats put it second to Facebook with a 25% share of traffic. (http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/facebook_accounts_for_half_social_traffic_stumbleu.php)

So then I asked someone to go and research Stumble Upon and for them to tell me how we could use it for The Do Lectures. (www.thedolectures.com) To get our great content out there to more people and faster.

Then coincidentally at the same time, we got an email from Stumble Upon saying they would like to give The Do Lectures $5000 worth of free advertising.  At first I thought it was spam. But I checked out the email address and it was for real.

Yeehah.

So not only had we just found out how important Stumble Upon was. And how powerful it is. But they wanted to help us. We were going to get $5000 worth of free advertising. That would bring us 100,000 views plus more if it went viral.

So this August, we spent their money. And correspondingly our viewing figures went crazy. It worked so well for us because we could target their interests to our interest so accurately. And, here’s the other good thing. It keeps on working.  If people think your content is great they keep telling people they like it. So it keeps on being spread out there for free. So even though we spent the money real quick, it is still working for us now. Like a snowball going down hill. It just keeps getting bigger. And it keeps rolling without us pushing.

We have tried many things at The Do Lectures to get our talks out there to more people. We have tried Facebook but it hardly made any difference to us. We know Google adwords works but they aren’t cheap.

So when we have some money next year to spend on getting people to see our talks, where will be spending our money? Stumble Upon, no doubt.

I would have said that before we were given $5000 to spend on it. But now I have proof. I saw what it did to our traffic. And, importantly, what it keeps doing to our traffic. I know spending money on Stumble Upon is a super smart way to spend our money.

Just to finish up, whenever we get some spike in our figures now, the first question I ask is it Stumble Upon? The answer is often “Yup”.

Stumble Upon may not get talked about that much, but it is one trade secret worth knowing about.

Because it works.

The ‘Do’ Day Courses Business model

The aim.

The aim of the ‘Do’ Day courses is to bring artisans/craftsman/entrepreneurs together with people who want to learn how to ‘Do’.

Why we ‘Do’ it?

The Do lectures is a not for profit company that’s in business to inspire people to go and make a change, to make a difference, to find a better way.

In order to provide talks for Free to the World, we have to find ways that help pay for Free. The ‘Do’ day courses are one of the ways that help us pay for Free. The good thing is it fits with our idea of inspiring people to go ‘Do.’

Why ‘Do’ will be good for you.

The Do Lectures will bring a new audience to you. They’re a progressive and influential bunch of people. We will market yourself via The Do Lectures digital platform (website, social media etc) which is a growing and influential crowd of people. You will get paid a fee for a days work. And we pay quick. And, apart from the day of teaching, we do pretty much everything else.

The Formula for a ‘Do’ Day course.

1, We only invite the ‘change makers’ to teach.

2, Keep it fun. People learn best while laughing.

3, Great food matters. (Local. Organic. Simple.)

4, Don’t make it stuffy. Create an irreverent atmosphere.

5, Stay small. Stay intimate. (10-15 people max.)

6, Passion is good to be around.

8, Real locations. Never, ever, from a conference center.

The ‘Do’ Day Course Business model.

We believe the ‘Do’ can be good for all parties. It can create income for the artisan and The Do Lectures and a great learning experience.

Expenses will be paid to the Artisan and The Do Lectures before anything else. These will include travel, materials and providing great food for our customers etc. All expenses will be agreed beforehand.

After deducting expenses, the split be the following:

Artisan – 70% of ticket price (After expenses)

The Do Lectures – 30% of ticket price (After expenses)

Work together on this stuff.

Together we will agree the pricing, the date and the format of the event.

If it doesn’t work for you, it won’t work for us or the customer.

So we will make sure you are happy with everything before we start.

And then it will fun for everybody.

The small Print.

Payment will be within 7 days of the course being completed.

All our prices exclude VAT.

If the course doesn’t achieve a 60% take up, together we can make a decision whether to go through with it.

Customer cancellations: Up to 3 weeks before, we will give a 80% refund. After that, we will not be able to give a refund unless we find someone else to take their place, which is fair.

Any customer who is not happy, we will simply refund their money. No questions asked.

The ‘Do’ will organize.

1, Promoting and Marketing the event to The Do audience.

2, Admin, invoicing and payments.

3, Directions to the event.

4, Great food (Unless the artisan has agreed to do it)

6, Inspiring venue (Unless the artisan has agreed to supply it)

7, Feedback to artisan from customer after the event.

8, Arrange for photos to be taken of the event.

What you will need to do?

1, Supply Bio.

2, Supply pictures, if possible.

3, Agree a ticket price, date/timing, format/food/ venue etc.

4, Turn up and inspire everyone. (No pressure).

Love Marion’s work

There are people out there that I would love to work with sometime.

Marion is one.

This is something she has done for her new book.

I will be buying a few copies.

Big Ed ‘Do’ Build Day course.

“How to restore an old building using traditional materials”

Lime is the concrete of the past and the future. It breathes, lives and dies. And it will be used even more in the future than it has been in the past. On this course you will get your hands dirty. You will learn how brilliant this stuff is and how easy it is to make. You will stand in front of an old farm barn and start to give it a future.

Location.

We live on an old farm. It is our home and where we run The Do Lectures from.

We are interested in getting it back to how it was by using local craftsmanship and natural materials.

It will be a fun day. A day where you put the overalls on (supplied) and roll up your sleeves to learn how to look after and restore an old building.

The best way to learn is by doing.

About ‘Big Ed.’

Big Ed is one of life’s true characters. He is part philosopher, part storyteller, part comedian. So expect to learn a great deal more than just how to restore an old building. He has been a builder all his working life. His quick wit and outlook on life will give you a day to remember.

What you will learn?

It will be a day course in building restoration with a focus on using natural materials:

Learn how to prepare a wall for hacking out.

How to mix a lime wash.

Learn the advantages of lime over cement.

Learn the advantages of cement over lime.

The history of Lime.

Learn how to make different mortar mixes.

Each of you will then be given a wall to hack out, and render with a lime mortar that you mix.

You will be given feedback on how you did and how to improve technique.

August 19th – 9am -5am

Price – £150

Limited to ten people.

Price includes – Great lunch with the best local ingredients. Wine.

Plus teas, coffees and snacks throughout the day etc.
