How to LOVE YOUR WORK

Express yourself

In order to make a wise choice you need to know yourself; your likes, dislikes, strengths, talents, multiple intelligences, limitations, interests, leisure preferences, needs, values, how you relate with others.   These are what makes you unique so check out how you express yourself.

Be a fire starter

Let’s work on the premise that any career can be put simply as the knowledge and skills necessary to perform, deliver and hopefully advance in that career. So to be knowledgeable you have to learn.  For starter’s that usually means taking a course to gain a qualification.  You learn subjects/stuff on the way to qualifying and then you need to learn constantly as you progress , just to keep up to date.  Curiosity isn’t the same thing as a thirst for knowledge.  Pick and build on what you’re really, deeply interested in, what get’s you animated, fired up and enthusiastic for – it’s that thirst which is the key to your flame.  Know your learning preferences, ignite your own flame and seek out ways of satisfying that thirst.

In what way are you smart (not how smart are you)

In today’s world the job for life has all but vanished, as indeed have some jobs.  Workers exchange their services, that is their knowledge & skills for hard cash.  Many of these skills are generic and transferrable to different work situations.  New opportunities emerge or are created.  That bank of skills you have were perfected by building on a preference for thinking & doing in certain ways.  If you prefer to think and act/express yourself in terms of controlled or precise bodily movements then you prefer using your Kinaesthetic intelligence to develop specific physical skills for sport, work, crafts, etc.  Likewise a preference for seeing, interpreting and thinking about the world through words by reading & writing develops and hones skills associated with Linguistic Intelligence – do a search on Multiple Intelligences or take the MIDAS questionnaire to gain an insight on your MI profile.  The important point here is to have a clear model of your strengths, aptitudes, your multiple intelligences so you can develop and acquire skills which you enjoy using.  We’re all differently intelligent, it’s just a matter of figuring out how you are intelligent and the ways you can utilise your unique intelligences in a meaningful, purposeful and rewarding way.

The Real People (an Aboriginal tribe) honour the fact that

“Human Beingness is an Experience of Expression, Creativity and Adventure.”

(cf Marlo Morgan, 1995)

You express yourself in everything you do – How do you prefer to express yourself?  In what ways are you creative, and how do you build on your strengths – you don’t need to be artistic to be creative , perhaps you’ve created your own career out of an opportunity which you excelled at?

Sometimes you just have to go for it – life is an adventure and perhaps far more chaotic or unpredictable than we’d prefer.  Putting your resources into insuring yourself against all risks kinda misses one of the beauties of being human, which is just experiencing life and rising to whatever challenges you meet along the way.  Make the best decision you can at any given time and then trust in yourself to adapt to, manage & overcome whatever difficulties or obstacles you will meet along the way.  Hopefully you enjoy your venture, learn a little more about yourself and prosper in the process.

All this takes time, and sometimes a little help. ( University and Career Planning takes time. )  You need to stop, think and take the time to get to know your true self.  You also need information in order to choose.  By understanding your preferences, informing yourself on the choice you’re making and building on your strengths you’re more likely to find happiness in what you do.  Why choose something you’d be interested & good at – you’ll work harder, be more motivated, probably get more opportunities or promotion, maybe even more money.  You’re more likely to find success from a strengths based action plan.  Self knowledge & Self Management is crucial to success in reaching and attaining your goal.

So choose according to how you express yourself and love your work.

Time Out

On holidays you’re supposed to have
more time to think
Reflect
See new things and
See things afresh
From a different angle
I don’t know what it is
The fresh air
Warmth of the summer sun on your skin
Eating differently
The lack of everyday tasks
And consequently fewer things on your mind
Maybe that’s it
Less to tax your resources
And more time to rebalance your self
Recharge and
Replemimsh
Regroup and
Renew
For the challenges ahead
So go on
Grab a few days off

Four guys

4 guys
17,000 miles up
Doing stuff most us haven’t gotta clue about
I like what science does
I like what
science does and science gives
Me
You
Us
Humanity
Science and scientific methods
Underpin
inspire
promote and
yield
Nearly everything
Most of us
Find useful
And value
Daily
every minute
Whether it’s the beer or wine to sip as we celebrate our daily life and the foods
that go with it
The communication and information technologies we increasingly rely on and which
sometimes fail us spectacularly
Or our understanding of the animal and plant life
Which sustain us
Physically
Emotionally and
Intellectually

Why
How
Should we support what has given us
Much of what makes our lives
Easier and better
Why try
To understand
To systematically explore and question
To create
Why bother
Why
Why not reawaken a bit of the natural scientist you were when you were a child
Question and look for proof
Don’t rely on or accept here-say and uninformed opinion
Understand deeply
(Be deeply informed)
It’s a fascinating and wondrous world (we are so fortunate to live on)

Science is not that scary
It’s all around us
It’s just about making sense of the world we live in
And improving how we live today
To make a better tomorrow.

Long live the 4 guys
And the tens of thousands of shoulders they stand on.
